The term acrotomophilia is generally used for someone who is strongly attracted by the physical disability of a person. The word Acrotomophilia comes from the ancient Greek akron [extremity], tomein [to cut] and philein [to love] and specifically refers to amputation. The term amelotatism has also been used to describe acrotomophilia. It is a counterpart to apotemnophilia, the sexual interest in being an amputee but this is, however, another subject. Today, acrotomophilia does not only describe the fact of being erotically excited by stumps of an amputee person but also by paralysis, spasticity, orthopaedic aids such as wheelchair or crutches and very rarely by people with sensory impairment. Although most acrotomophiles are male, the phenomenon is not unknown among women.

I was born with bilateral lower extremity abnormalities. I had a bilateral above-knee amputation when I was fourteen months old. Ever since then, I have been wearing prosthetic legs. My physical disability has impacted me in all aspects of my life, but it has also taught me resilience, motivation, and perseverance. In fact, my disability has pushed me to thrive in the academic, professional, and social aspects of my life. One thing that limb loss has affected is my dating life.
Growing up, I was much more self-conscious about my disability in social environments. In fact, elementary and middle school were extremely difficult for me. Due to all of the attention I was getting, this caused me to have a low self-esteem, especially when it came to talking to boys. All of my friends around me were dating, except for me. Instead, guys were asking me to hook them up with my friends. When I started college, things definitely changed.

Who wants a ride? Not that I have much to complain about. Sure, I use a mobility scooter to get around on the street, but people have cars, right? Yeah, if you were a woman who decided to try dating men with disabilities tomorrow, but wanted to ease into it—I’m practically training wheels. At the time, Ella was feeling ready to meet someone special and had made a conscious decision to focus on her love life, but when she started dating again, she found herself ghosted by Tinder matches as soon as she mentioned her prosthetic.
Others were a little too interested, and it turned out her first Tinder date had a foot fetish and was overly excited by the idea of her prosthetic, while another asked to touch her stump. Below, Ella reveals how she navigated the new world of dating as a disabled person. Ella Dove pictured who lost her right leg after being injured while running in , revealed how the amputation impacted her love life. I watched from the sidelines as my clever, attractive, funny, two-legged friends went on dates.
I heard their stories, smiling on the outside while nerves concerning my own situation fizzed in my stomach. Men with topless gym selfies; men at weddings; men who hiked up mountains and probably wore socks with sandals. There were even men who posted their Uber ratings like Nobel Prizes. Then, I’d look at my stump, ugly and swollen; at the angry red scars, the result of eight operations, inside both of my thighs.
How, I wondered, could anyone ever find this attractive? My phone vibrated each time I had a match and I’d pick it up to message people — only to put it back down again. Ella pictured says she struggled with when to tell men that she’s an amputee, when searching for love using online dating.

So love, yeah, fair game. Though being honest I would hesitate in starting a relationship with a person who had difficulty being physically self-sufficient. He’d have to have outstanding qualities to really win me over! I mean, he’d have to be ten times more charming than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I’m saying? Originally Posted by 80SC.
